Frequently Asked Questions
Why learn an instrument?
Learning an instrument can be a great way to enjoy a side of life that otherwise might go untouched. It can heighten the senses and lift the spirits. It’s great fun and, regardless of age and ability, together we build beautiful music and great relationships
Why learn a brass instrument?
Brass instruments are the most fun! Los of different groups need brass: orchestras, wind, jazz and brass bands, and other ensembles. I may be biased, but brass often adds the brilliant flourish or beautiful moment to a piece. Also (don’t tell the others) they’re not that difficult to learn. However, as with many things, they take a lifetime to master.
When and where do lessons take place?
Lessons are usually at my house in Sheffield S7; although lessons at students homes can be made by arrangement.
What do I offer as a teacher?
I’m a grade 8 distinction trumpet and cornet player with many years’ experience playing lots of different styles of music. I play with local orchestras and brass bands, and occasionally pit orchestras and jazz bands.
Do I coach students through exams?
Exams are not essential as learning should always be for fun. However, they can help to stretch ability and mark progress. I mainly teach to ABRSM exam board but other exam boards are good too.
